Stanford is the Overberg’s quiet centre of gravity. It lies inland from the cliffs of De Kelders, where the road from Hermanus meets the Klein River. The drive takes about twenty minutes, but the village feels a long way from the sea: shady streets, a village green, old cottages behind low walls, and mountains rising behind it all.
A village with a plan
Stanford was laid out in the 1850s on land that had been a farm in the Klein River valley. The first plots were registered in 1857, the date you still see at the village entrance, and the village took its name from a former owner of the land, Sir Robert Stanford.
Much of that original shape survives. The Stanford Conservation Trust describes a heritage area with a grid of streets around a village green and market square, and leiwater furrows that once carried water to the gardens. The cottages are Cape Victorian, Edwardian and Cape Dutch Revival. It is a place made for walking: pick up a coffee, wander the side streets and let the village reveal itself slowly.
The Klein River
The Klein River runs along the edge of the village on its way to the lagoon near Hermanus, where it eventually meets Walker Bay. It is one of the pleasures of Stanford. The water is dark and still, reeds line the banks, and birdlife is everywhere. River cruises head downstream towards the lagoon, and on calm days you can paddle or simply sit on the bank.
At the other end of the river, near Hermanus, the Klein River lagoon opens onto Walker Bay at times, where the fresh water spills into the sea. It is worth seeing on a Hermanus day.
Tables and makers
Stanford has a reputation for good food out of all proportion to its size. There are village restaurants, farm kitchens and bakeries, and producers of cheese, beer and more in the surrounding valleys. Opening days change with the seasons, so ask your hosts what is open when you visit, and book ahead at weekends.
Saturday mornings are a good time to come, when the village is at its liveliest and there is often a market.
The wine around Stanford
Stanford sits within the Walker Bay wine district, and the hills around the village form their own Wine of Origin ward, Stanford Foothills. The Stanford wine route brings together around ten wineries in the surrounding valleys, from small family farms to estates with views to the sea. The cool influence of the Atlantic shapes the wines; this is a region for crisp whites, elegant reds and a slow afternoon of tasting.
Our suggestion: choose one or two farms rather than five, book a table for lunch, and let someone else drive.
Into the mountains
Behind the village, the land rises into mountain fynbos. Phillipskop, a mountain reserve outside Stanford, has trails with views back over the valley towards the coast. Spring brings the flowers; winter brings clear, cold light.
An easy afternoon
Leave De Kelders after a morning of whale watching and have lunch in Stanford. Walk the green and the old streets, then take a slow drive home past the wine farms in the late afternoon. It is exactly the kind of day this coast does best.
