The Overberg rewards people who don’t rush. Distances are short, and the best moments tend to be unplanned: a whale surfacing below the garden, a long lunch that becomes an afternoon. This itinerary is deliberately loose. Treat it as a shape for three days, not a schedule, and swap days around to suit the weather and the sea.
It assumes you are staying in De Kelders, about two hours’ drive from Cape Town.
Before you arrive
Leave Cape Town after lunch, or after an early flight, and take the N2 east over Sir Lowry’s Pass. Turn off onto the R43 towards Hermanus and continue through Stanford. If you have time, the coastal route via Gordon’s Bay, Betty’s Bay and Kleinmond is slower and spectacular. Stop in Hermanus or Gansbaai for supplies, and arrive in De Kelders in time to see the evening light on the bay.
Day one: the cliffs
Morning. Start with coffee on the deck and binoculars. In whale season, from roughly June to November, spend the first hour just watching the bay. Then walk the cliff path west through the fynbos to Walker Bay Nature Reserve.
Late morning. Go down the boardwalk to Klipgat Cave, where people sheltered in the Middle Stone Age, tens of thousands of years ago. From the cave mouth, the whole curve of Walker Bay opens up towards Hermanus.
Afternoon. Have a slow lunch at home or in Gansbaai, then walk on Die Plaat, the long white beach of the nature reserve. Wind, sand and not much else.
Evening. Sundowners facing the bay, and dinner by the fire.
Day two: the sea
Morning. If the sea is calm, take an early boat from Kleinbaai, ten minutes away, out to Dyer Island and Geyser Rock: seals, seabirds, and whales and dolphins in season. Choose a licensed operator, and be realistic about sharks. Bronze whalers are now the usual sighting; great whites have been rare since 2017. If the swell is up, keep this for another day.
Midday. Visit the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary in Kleinbaai, where rescued seabirds are rehabilitated.
Afternoon. Drive out to Danger Point Lighthouse, first lit in 1895, and stand on the headland where the troopship HMS Birkenhead was lost in 1852. The late afternoon light across the fynbos is beautiful.
Evening. Stay in: fish from Gansbaai on the braai, and an early night with the sound of the sea.
Day three: village and valley
Morning. Drive twenty minutes inland to Stanford. Walk the village green and the old streets of Victorian cottages, and wander down to the Klein River. On a Saturday the village is at its liveliest.
Lunch. Choose a farm on the Stanford wine route, or continue to the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley behind Hermanus for cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Book ahead, and choose a driver.
Afternoon. On the way home, if you have energy, walk a stretch of the Hermanus Cliff Path or the beach at Grotto. Alternatively, head straight back to De Kelders for a last, slow evening above the bay.
If you have longer
Stay a week. Repeat day one as often as you like. Add Grootbos for the fynbos and milkwood forests, Fernkloof above Hermanus, and a lazy day that is simply lost. The Overberg is slow-travel country, and it is best measured in days, not checklists.
Good to know
- A car is essential. Most places above are 5–50 minutes from De Kelders.
- The sea sets the plan. Boat trips depend on conditions; keep a flexible morning.
- Layers, always. The Cape’s weather can change within an hour, even in summer.
- Book lunches. Especially at weekends and in whale season.
